Jones Summer Storage Program

Jones Moving & Storage is pleased to offer a Storage Program specifically designed for RISD students! This program is designed to provide you with the best storage services available at the best prices possible. Details are listed below. Be sure to sign up in advance to store your belongings in the Historic Jones Warehouse located just one mile from campus!

All stored items will be returned to the new student rooms prior to your arrival in September. By signing up for storage, you are authorizing us to release your items in storage to a member of Residence Life. As always, goods coming into storage will be inventoried and checked off when being delivered back to the rooms.  All accounts must be paid in full before goods are delivered in the fall.

RISD Storage Rates

Plan A (Up to 9 Items)
Picked up in room and delivered back to room - $425
Curbside and delivered back to room -  $375

Plan B (10 to 16 Items)
Picked up in room and delivered back to room - $525
Curbside and delivered back to room - $475

Plan C (17 to 22 Items)
Picked up in room and delivered back to room - $600
Curbside and delivered back to room - $550

These prices are per student and loads must not be combined with other students.

Important: Boxes cannot be too heavy for one person to carry. Overweight boxes can break open. Do not use "extra large" boxes as they are not strong enough to protect the contents. Best to use boxes no bigger than marked "large."

"Extra large" and "grande" boxes are too big and can crush and split open.

RISD Summer Storage Policy

  • Best to sign up by May 20th.
  • Boxes must not be too large and too heavy to be lifted and carried by one person. Overweight boxes will be assessed a $25 charge if two men required to lift and carry.
  • Goods will be picked up at 55 Angell Street (Homer-Nickerson) and at 15 Westminster. Also Colonial Apartments and Dwight Apartments. Students at any other location will need to call our office for a special pickup. An additional charge may apply.
  • All belongings will be delivered back prior to your arrival in the fall.
  • Students must store goods under their names and not be combined with other students.
  • The normal contents of a standard dorm room will be accepted as one shipment.
  • No food, no liquids, and especially no flammable liquids.
  • Payment is accepted by check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted.
  • All goods will be inventoried with a copy given to each student.
  • Warehouse liability is available for a small extra charge. Call for details.
  • There may be an extra charge for forcing us to make repeat pick-ups or last minute cancellations.
  • Our plan is Dorm room to Dorm room. We can pick-up and deliver to off campus locations, however that would have an additional charge. Please call our office if you are moving off-campus next year.

Reminders

  • All goods should be double-labeled with name on both sides.
  • Cartons should have lids and be sealed shut. Remember, cartons should not be too large to be carried.
  • Mark only those boxes containing delicate items as "fragile"
  • Make sure they are properly packed, taped, sealed, and labeled with your name on two sides of the box.
  • Use the right size box. Heavy items (books, etc.) go in small boxes. Light items may go in large boxes
  • Heavy-duty plastic bags can be used for quilts or comforters but are not recommended. Plastic bags can and frequently do rip open exposing goods to possible soiling or loss.
  • Clothing should be in cartons only, not plastic bags
  • Bulky items such as guitars, bicycles, mirrors and/or lamps do not necessarily need to be boxed, but they should be protected and labeled.
  • Make sure we obtain your billing address and contact number during the summer.
  • Please be ready and on time on moving day. Please answer your phone and be ready to go. Timing is critical to get all students picked up.

Our Heritage

Store your items at the historic Jones Warehouse, a landmark in the City of Providence. Jones Warehouse is one of the first warehouses in the country built specifically for furniture storage.

As one of the longest, continuous providers of summer student storage in Rhode Island, we know how to best store and serve your needs. We have been providing summer student storage for over 50 years!

Our prices are very competitive, and your goods will be moved and stored by a full-service moving and storage business located less than one mile from your campus. We would be honored to add you to our long list of satisfied customers. We can also provide moving services for local, long-distance, and international moves.

RISD Summer Storage Program - FAQ

To help serve you better, we have made this FAQ section below.

During the lead-up to the summer season, our phones are very busy. Please review the FAQ section if you have any questions. If you require additional information that is not provided here, we ask that you send us an email at billing@rimover.com or call our office at 401-421-0081, which will allow us to assist you in a timely manner.

  • I live in a RISD dorm but my dorm building is not specifically listed in the form. Can you pick up from my dorm?

Yes, if you are housed in a RISD dorm building, we should be able to pick up your items. If you don’t see your dorm listed, please select “Other” and type in the name of your dorm.

  • I live off campus, can I still have my goods stored for the summer under this plan?

The quoted prices for the different plans are for pick-up from and delivery to a RISD dorm room. Depending on circumstances such as distance and requested dates, we may be able to accommodate other pick-up and drop-off locations. (NOTE: WE CANNOT PICK UP GOODS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS FROM MAY 21ST THROUGH MAY 23RD. ALL TRUCKS WILL BE AT THE DORMS.) Generally, if you have a similar number of items as we would normally take for a dorm pickup (fewer than 20 items total, no heavy or large pieces of furniture), we can still provide a student discount from our regular rates. Please reach out to us at billing@rimover.com for inquiries.

  • Can I specify a specific time of day to have my goods picked up on the chosen date?

Our dorm room pickups operate on a batch system. On the day of your pickup, a truck will be dispatched to your dorm, and we will call each student to confirm readiness, generally in order of sign-ups. We ask that you be ready for pickup when you receive that call. Due to the large number of students participating in this program each year, we are generally unable to provide a specific pickup time in advance or guarantee a specific time of day. If you know you will be unavailable after a certain time (e.g., to catch a flight), please schedule your pickup for the day before. We may not reach you until mid-afternoon on your chosen pickup date. We will do our best to accommodate each student.

  • Can I have my goods picked up over the weekend?

We have pickup dates available on Saturday, May 23rd, as well as Saturday, May 30th. We are not available on Sundays.

  • What do I do if I don’t know where I’ll be staying yet next year?

Through our partnership with RISD, we will receive information from the school regarding your assigned room once finalized. If you do not currently know whether you will be living on- or off-campus next year, we can still hold your goods for the summer. If you decide to live off-campus, we provide delivery service within the Providence area at a discounted rate. Alternatively, we can bring your goods to our warehouse loading dock for you to pick up at no additional charge, provided everything is taken at one time. If multiple trips are required, a warehouse labor charge may apply.

  • I may end up needing to store my goods for longer than the summer storage period. Can I keep my goods in storage longer?

Yes. We offer longer-term storage plans at an additional $60 per month for each extra month you would like your goods to remain in storage.

  • Do I need to be present for the pickup/drop-off?

Someone will need to be present for the pickup, either curbside or to grant access to the room. Please try to be available on the day of your scheduled pickup. If necessary, a roommate or friend may be present on your behalf, but you must provide authorization in the form of a signed and notarized agreement allowing them to sign off on your goods. For delivery, we coordinate with the school to have your items placed back into your room before move-in.

  • My roommate has just a few items they need stored. Could I add them to my storage load?

Generally, we do not allow mixing of storage loads. If another person’s items are included in your load, please note that they will not have access to them unless you are present to authorize release. No goods can be released to anyone other than the student who signed up for the storage plan.

  • Do you provide boxes/packing services under this plan?

All goods must be fully packed by the time we arrive for pickup. Please ensure packing is completed before your scheduled pickup date. In previous years, we have encountered delays when students were still packing at the time of pickup, which resulted in rescheduling. You must be ready when we call you on the day of pickup. If you need boxes, we hold a pop-up box sale on the RISD Quad in the weeks leading up to move-out day. Please stay tuned for the dates.

  • Do I need to use your boxes?

No, you may use any packing materials you prefer. Please ensure all items are securely packed and nothing is at risk of falling out.

  • I do not have access to PayPal. What other methods are available for payment?

We can accept payment over the phone via debit card. We also accept cash or check at our main office located at 59 Central St., Providence. Please do not pay the movers directly on the day of the move.

  • What qualifies as an “item” under the terms of the plan?

An “item” is any freestanding piece that can be carried by one person. For example, a toaster oven is considered one item; however, if it is placed in a box with other items, the entire box is considered one item. Please note there is a $25 surcharge for any item that is overly heavy or difficult to handle. If a single person cannot easily carry a box up two or three flights of stairs, it is too heavy and should be divided into multiple boxes.

  • I signed up for a specific plan but now believe I will have more/fewer items. How do I change my plan?

After pickup, if we determine that your storage falls under a different plan (based on the number of items), we will adjust your plan accordingly. You will only be charged for the number of items we actually store.

  • Can I/my friend/my relative access some of my goods while they are in storage?

If you need access to your goods during the storage period, there are several options. If you wish to fully vacate your storage early, we can bring all items to our loading dock for pickup at no additional charge. If you need a specific item retrieved, a warehouse labor fee may apply. You must be present to sign the release of any items. If you would like to authorize someone else, a notarized letter is required stating that you are granting that individual access to your storage.

  • Would you ship my goods across the country or out of state if I am not returning to campus next year?

Jones Moving and Storage can deliver goods within the New England area as well as parts of New York. For longer-distance or international moves, we can coordinate delivery with another shipping service that handles extended transport. Please contact us as soon as possible if you anticipate needing long-distance delivery
